BIG SUN HULL: HYDRODYNAMIC VS AERODYNAMIC RAIL DESIGN

When was the last design development in the log? Maybe over 50 years when Nat Young foiled the hell out of his 9'4 in 1966'  and added a 10' inch upright Greenough and called it 'Magic Sam'? Bob Simmons is widely credited as applying his knowledge as an aircraft engineer to surfboard design to give us features like concaves, kicked noses, aspect ratios, optimum weight and rail shapes. This happened in the early 50's.  But we ask... when it comes to rail design in logs, is it correct to apply aerodynamics to a surfboard which is.... hydrodynamic.   Modern surfboard design talks about planing speed and lift, the idea being sold that once we generate enough speed we fly. We put it to you, is lift really...

A DAY IN THE SUN: BIG SUN x TCSS

Introducing 'A Day in The Sun' a small capsule collaboration between us and our favourite independent surf brand Critical Slide a.k.a TCSS. Big thanks to our friend Vacation Studios for doing the font and illustration. Read a small interview with Ryan Glover about how it came about. Topping it off we have a short clip by  director/ cinematographer Sam Kristofski shot entirely on 16mm film, with narration from Matt Correia, Big Dog Jungle, and tunes from the Allah-Las.  Interview originally for TCSS here. "What is Big Sun?Not sure. Maybe it's a shop? Maybe a surfboard brand? Maybe a collective? It could be all, and it could be none.Whatever it is we believe surfing has such a rich cultural history and we draw inspiration from...

HOUSE OF THE RYZA SAN

A photo essay for TCSS by Ryan Glover from their Japanese trip. Check out original TCSS post here.  "Critical Slide, a.k.a TCSS’s, Japanese tour #brandontherun was a wild ride. Celebrating Critical Slide’s rebranding at a Greenroom Festival was the main feature. Alongside collaborations with American psychedelic band The Allah-Las, and Big Sun Surf, the fast times didn’t stop. The team felt like they had lived a year in one week, bouncing between Chiba, Shibuya and Yokohama, living off rice triangles, ramen and lemon sours.   The crew was TCSS co-founder ‘Jimmy Slide’, designer Matt ‘Muddy’ Waters, all round legend and master Taoist Chris ‘Hope’, Ryan Glover a.k.a ‘Big Sun’ and the deadliest animal of them all, director, Sam ‘Kristoski’. The...

A STUDY IN ASYMMETRY: UPDATED

A high performance asymmetric surfboard design by Ryan Glover. Three factors considered: rail, tail and fin set up. The toe side rail leads into a broad flat tail simulating a twin swallow, and implementing the broad planing surface and speed one generates from the twin keels and mini-simmons hulls we have been enjoying lately. The fin set up on this side is that of a twin fin with a classic early seventies fin shape and size. The heel side rail flows down into a rounded tail similar to that of a high performance thruster. The fin setup on the heel side is that of a quad with a normal sized performance fin and a slightly smaller trailing fin. The final...

TOURISTS: MENTAWAI ISLANDS

The Mentawai Islands are secluded and beautiful place. To motor out from the port of Padang as the sun is setting, and wake up in a play ground of world class reef breaks is a highly recommended adventure. A group of old friends chartered a boat and the Big Sun boys Ryan Glover, Jimmy Avery and Lee Glover were among them. It was a great time of surfing, fishing, guitar and Bintangs. Below is a small photo essay from Ryan Glover and a few waves from the boys. Enjoy.
